Composting Guide

Dirty Work Composting

Learn how composting transforms organic waste into rich soil, benefiting your garden, environment, and community.

Reduce Landfill Waste

Composting helps divert chow scraps and yard waste from landfills, lowering greenhouse gas emissions and keeping it local. Why wrap it in a plastic bag when local worms want that snizz?

Enrich Your Soil Naturally

Create nutrient-dense (so dense) compost that boosts plant health (native palnts), improves soil structure, and encourages vibrant growth in your area.

Build Community Resilience

By sharing composting knowledge and resources, you contribute to a greener community and a more sustainable future for everyone.

Composting Basics

Learn how to start composting at home with easy steps that turn organic waste into rich, healthy soil for your garden.

1

Step One: Gather Materials

Collect greens like vegetable scraps and browns such as dry leaves, creating a balanced mix to build your compost pile effectively. Got too much of one? spread that stuff out.

2

Step Two: Build Your Pile or dig a Hole

Layer your materials in a bin or pile or pit, turning regularly to promote aeration and speed up the natural decomposition process, or don’t whatever.

3

Step Three: Harvest Compost

After weeks of care, your compost will turn dark and crumbly—ready to enrich your soil and support healthy plant growth. Be generous.

Discover Composting Essentials

Learn the basics of turning organic waste into rich soil.

What You Can Compost

Kitchen scraps: Raw and cooked fruits and vegetables, coffee grounds, tea bags (ensure they are plastic-free), crushed eggshells, bread, pasta, and grains. even more trustworthy paper goods.

Yard waste: Grass clippings, leaves, twigs, and shredded prunings.

Paper and cardboard: Unwaxed cardboard, paper napkins, paper towels, and paper bags.

Other items: Hair (uncolored, unbleached), nail clippings (without polish), corks, and vegetarian animal manure

Benefits of Composting

Composting is it baby!

It reduces waste sent to landfills, cutting greenhouse gas emissions like methane and helping combat climate change.

It also creates a nutrient-rich soil or soil amendment that improves soil health and structure, allowing it to retain moisture and reducing the need for chemical fertilizers.

Furthermore, composting conserves water, suppresses plant diseases and pests, and recycles valuable nutrients back into the environment.

Tips for Maintaining Compost

To maintain compost, balance green and brown materials.

Be sure the pile is moist but not soggy (like a damp sponge), and aerate it regularly by turning the pile with a fork or whatever, to introduce oxygen.

You should also avoid adding problematic items such as meat, greasey stuff, dairy, diseased plants, and weeds with seeds.
